The Phonemic Awareness Kit comprises a set of activities designed to develop phonological awareness. The activities vary in complexity but can be adapted for use with both preschool children and those in the first years of primary school. All activities are carried out orally.
Activities Included in the Kit PIPALE Phonemic Awareness
Discover the Intruder Sound
This activity involves identifying the word with the intruder initial sound, meaning the word whose initial sound is different from the initial sounds of the other words. Once the intruder sound is identified, the child should place a piece in the shape of an X over the image.
Count the Sounds
This activity involves counting the number of sounds in each word by segmenting it into its individual sounds. First, the child counts the syllables, then proceeds to count the sounds in each syllable. The syllables are represented with circles, and the sounds with triangles.
Dragon Game
This activity involves identifying words with the same initial sounds. It is played like a card game similar to “Go Fish.” The goal is to form pairs of cards based on the initial sound of different animal names. One of the cards, the dragon card, does not form a pair with any other card.
Swap the Sound
This activity consists of replacing the initial sound of a word with the initial sound of another given word. By substituting the sound, a new word is created.
Guess the Word
This activity involves guessing a word by combining the initial sound of a sequence of words. The image of the created word is placed on the green rectangle of each game card. The activity is performed only orally.
