Objectives

This course aims to raise awareness among preschool and primary school educators regarding appropriate attitudes, strategies, and materials that foster the linguistic development of children who do not speak Portuguese as their first language and who are enrolled in Portuguese schools.

The course seeks to:

i) provide an understanding of the specific characteristics of second language acquisition in early learners;

ii) encourage educators to reflect critically on strategies that promote linguistic development and academic success for children learning Portuguese as an additional language, in light of current research in the field;

iii) promote the development of positive and inclusive attitudes toward linguistic and cultural diversity in school settings, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the full inclusion of all children.

Objectives

This course aims to equip educators with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement inclusive pedagogical practices that foster linguistic development and academic success among children with Language Development Disorders (LDD), Speech Sound Disorders (SSD), and specific linguistic profiles associated with clinical conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The course will:

i. raise awareness of early warning signs of language and speech disorders;

ii. explore the linguistic characteristics of children with LDD, SSD, and clinical conditions;

iii. present effective strategies for communication, reading, and writing instruction;

iv. support the creation of inclusive classroom environments.

i. provide an overview of general features of bilingual and multilingual language development and the factors that influence it;

ii. foster reflection on educational strategies that support the linguistic development and academic success of children whose first language is not Portuguese or who speak a non-standard variety of Portuguese, based on current research;

iii. encourage the development of inclusive and appreciative attitudes toward linguistic diversity in the classroom, with a view to ensuring the full inclusion of all children.

Objectives

This course aims to raise awareness among preschool and primary school educators regarding appropriate attitudes and strategies for fostering awareness of linguistic variation in Portuguese among preschool and early primary learners.

The course seeks to:
i. provide an overview of the main distinguishing features of national varieties of Portuguese and dialectal varieties of European Portuguese (EP);

ii. encourage educators to reflect on strategies that promote awareness of linguistic variation and educational success for children whose first language is a variety of Portuguese distinct from standard EP, drawing on current research in the field;

iii. promote the development of positive attitudes toward linguistic diversity in school settings, thereby fostering the inclusion of all children.

Objectives

This course is designed to enhance the scientific and pedagogical competencies of educators and teachers in fostering phonological awareness, recognized as a key predictive skill for successful reading and writing learning.

By the end of the course, participants are expected to:
i) develop a solid understanding of fundamental phonological concepts;

ii) become familiar with various activities aimed at developing phonological awareness, including the identification and manipulation of phonemes, syllables, and syllable constituents;

iii) be capable of incorporating phonological awareness into effective reading and writing instruction.

Objectives

This course aims to equip teachers with both scientific and didactic knowledge to support the development of syntactic awareness, in close connection with reading comprehension and text production activities.

Through this course, teachers are expected to:
i) become familiar with a variety of activities designed to foster syntactic awareness, including manipulation tasks, sentence completion, acceptability judgments, and metasyntactic reflection, grounded in discovery-based learning principles;

ii) understand the varying levels of cognitive demand associated with different tasks;

iii) effectively integrate syntactic awareness activities into teaching practices that promote success in reading comprehension and written production across different text genres.
